following the ancient art of wet felting using just wool, soap and water
The Wet Felting Experience
I run felt making workshops in schools, craft fairs and local events. My very first workshop at The Brighton Mini Maker Faire was to 'Wrap a Brighton Rock - using just wool, soap and water' I passed on my felting knowledge to 140 enthralled participants in one day from toddlers to seniors alike! Not only do you take your piece of art home, but you take with you a new skill too!
Wet felting is ideal for school projects, after school clubs, corporate team building and community events. Felting together results in creating a unique wall hanging for display or an individual mini work of art!
Here are some of my varied themes the most popular being a mini animal art. Also felted rocks, Christmas baubles, butterfly and flower hair accessories, ready to wear unicorn horns and felted geodes (sushi)
My felt making workshops have included drop in sessions at The Brighton Mini Maker Faire, The Fairy Tale Fair, Herstmonceux Medieval Festival, The Floral Fringe Fair, Wilderness Wood, Weald and Downland Museum, Bentley Wood fair, Firle Vintage, Sussex Prairie Garden
This simple and easy to follow workshop is perfect for kids and absolute beginners who wan't to try their hand at something a little different, and also as a refresher for occasional felters. I'm happy to guide individuals or a fun group activity for like minded friends!
During this online lesson I will guide you through the process of wet felting in this easy to follow method. The pace of the workshop depends on you but will last for roughly 2 hours. I suggest creating a felted work of art size roughly A4 size on a theme of your choice. Animal portraits are always a firm favourite, self portraits, landscapes and basically any subject as long as its kept simple. Other projects are available too if you have your own ideas or you can choose from the workshop gallery below.
Suggested list of equipment:
Merino Wool Tops approx 200g - online stockists provide useful selection packs
Decorative wool - silks, mohair locks - optional
Bubble wrap x 2 approx 40 x 40 cm (larger than your intended artwork)
netting or cotton (same size as bubble wrap)
Sushi mat or bamboo place mat - optional
soap bar (I use olive oil soap but any soap works)
Plant spray for a diluted washing up liquid solution
Pot for pouring water, plastic tablecloth and towel
This online class will be for 2 hours accessed on zoom so you will need to download the app, preferably on a device with a larger screen than a phone for ease of viewing clearly. Please contact me to discuss a project and arrange a suitable time.
